Shigemi Inagaki Shihan 8th dan Aikikai

Sclub line upfull group inagaki

The West Midlands Aikido Association & The London Aikido Club co hosted a very prestigious event in the Aikido Calendar with Shigemi Inagaki Shihan, 8th Dan Aikikai, first visit and seminar in the UK.
The event was held at the Birmingham NIA Leisure Centre on 23rd/24th May 2015. The event was held in front of 125 people training from 10 different countries across Europe and including one from as far as Australia . The total mat space was a massive 960 Sq M which was filled with bodies very enthusiastically waiting the start of the class.
Day one, Inagaki Sensei taught Aiki Ken principles as well Kumi Tachi movements which where quick and very smooth. In the afternoon he taught Aiki Jo in the form of Kumi Jo’s and suburi movements. A lot of information was given and a lot of food for thought to take away and adapt and build on.
Day two, Inagaki Sensei taught Taijutsu techniques which stemmed from the basics and importance of Kokyo in your techniques and the understanding of the connection of the weapons principles we had learnt in day 1. We covered a wide varied set of techniques and Henka Wazas of Ikkyo, Sankyo and Irimi Nage in a detailed explanation. We ended the day with an array of different Kaeshi Waza techniques of Ikkyo and Irimi Nage.
All that left, left with a smile and lots of food for thought to take away. Inagaki sensei expressed his pleasure in teaching in the UK and that he would like to return again to show and give more.

Shigemi Inagaki Shihan 8th dan Aikikai was born and raised in Iwama. In 1958 he enrolled as a student of the Aikido Founder, Ueshiba Morihei. He trained directly under him for 11 years in his dojo in Iwama. After graduating from Nihon University in Tokyo in 1969 after the founders passing he devoted him self to the founders dojo and Aikido and spent 2½ years in the Iwama Dojo as uchi deshi under Morihiro Saito Shihan and then 30 plus years as Soto deshi under Morihiro Saito Shihan in the founders dojo after that.
In these latter years Inagaki Sensei is featured as Saito Sensei’s weapons training partner in the book series ”Traditional Aikido” together with the films Saito Sensei released in the early 1970s. He travelled with Saito Sensei to the USA in the 1970s to accompany him and act as his assistant in training.

Today Inagaki Sensei is the General Manager of, and a teacher in, the Iwama Dojo, now called Ibaraki Shibu Dojo (Ibaraki Branch Dojo). This is O-Sensei’s dojo – the dojo where Morihiro Saito Shihan also taught for 33 years. Inagaki Sensei is a member of the All Japan Aikido Federation Council, and Regular Director of the Ibaraki Aikido Federation. Inagaki Sensei is also the Chairman of Myanmar Aikikai and Chief instructor of Aikido Association of Myanmar.
Inagaki Sensei is one of the most well known, and experienced, teachers from the Ibaraki Shibu Dojo. He travels worldwide to teach, and generously shares his deep understanding in Aikido, based on almost 55 years of training. In his teaching’s he incorporates talks about what Aikido has meant to him, and of his views on the spiritual dimension of Aikido that O Sensei followed and wanted to pass on.

Inagaki Sensei is the closest person alive that I know and I have trained under to O Sensei. Which I think makes him very special in my eyes. Not only this. But his Aikido is very smooth and powerful and he is happy to share as much information with you that he has learned. From my time in Iwama with him I found him a very humble and kind hearted gentleman who was over generous and very happy to be in your company.
